Microbiology at the Farm a Success
On 20th May we ran a Level 1 Microbiology Training Course at Folly Farm near Bristol.
Folly Farm is an eco-centre run by very sustainable means and is owned and managed by Avon Wildlife Trust (so all profits go back to this charity to help maintain their biodiversity projects in more than 30 other nature reserves). They supplied us with good food at lunch time and a perpetual supply of drinks, biscuits and cakes throughout the day.
The day was an opportunity to learn more about microbiology and testing from out Group Microbiology Technical Manager, Thelma Hooper. The programme covered topics such as:
• Types of micro-organisms
• Structure of bacteria
• Cell division and population growth
• Factors affecting growth
• Food spoilage and food safety
• Food poisoning organisms and types of food poisoning
• Enumeration methods, laboratory testing
• Media types and their purposes
The feedback we have received is very positive and all the attendees would recommend our courses to their colleagues. All the delegates received a certificate of attendance. For the brave who returned a completed optional exam, a further certificate will be issued upon successful results.
Is there a burning subject that you would like to see covered by a regular course? Is there anything your new employees always find difficult? If you have any suggestions for course topics either microbiology or chemistry related then we would love to hear from you. Email ann.hammer@alcontrol.com
ALcontrol are currently developing a series of new courses so keep a look out for new events coming soon!
